Transportation Roadway Engineer

ABOUT THE POSITION
TRANSPORTATION ROADWAY ENGINEER | RICHMOND, VA | VIRGINIA BEACH, VA | HYBRID
VHB’s Richmond and Virginia Beach, VA offices are seeking a Transportation Roadway Engineer to join our team.
Duties include highway design, development of traffic management plans, cost estimating, right-of-way and construction plans. Our multi-disciplined team uses its skills and experience to improve our communities with a sustainable, context driven and integrated project delivery mindset. Our clients include municipalities, VDOT and other state agencies, and private partners who support the development of the places we live, work, recreate and learn.

Perform engineering duties as a Project Engineer, including analysis and design for complex transportation projects, grading, and plan development
Contribute to the design and production of transportation projects such as highway widenings/reconstructions, intersection improvements, roundabouts, and shared-use/bike-pedestrian facilities
Help develop and deliver client-facing documents, including construction plans, while maintaining adherence to project budgets and schedules
Apply VHB standards and industry best practices to ensure quality control of work products
Support marketing efforts through technical input for proposals and presentation materials
Contribute to the coordination of multi-disciplinary design teams, including collaboration with subconsultants
Partner with technical specialists to resolve design challenges, coordination issues, and conflicting criteria
Provide support during the bidding phase, including preparation of addenda, amendments, and bid reviews/tabulations
Participate in construction phase services, including site visits, responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and preparing record drawings
Mentor and support the professional growth of entry-level Transportation staff
Skills/Abilities
Ability to handle multiple concurrent projects and willingness to serve in a variety of roles within a design team
Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
AutoCAD with Civil 3D Corridor experience and/or MicroStation with Geopak, Open Roads experience or Open Roads Designer is strongly preferred.
Qualifications
BS in Civil Engineering required, MS a plus
3–5+ years of professional transportation engineering experience required
EIT required, PE certification preferred
