ABOUT THE POSITION

VHB’s Transportation Engineering & Highway Co-op - Watertown, MA is designed to introduce students into the workforce. The program will build essential professional skills by offering opportunities for hands-on learning in a supportive yet challenging environment. The intern program is designed to round out participants’ academic learning with real world experience and help them explore related areas of practice to find the best fit for their career path.

Co-op term runs from June - December 2026.

Our Transportation team works with public, private, and institutional clients to support a variety of projects. Our services include design of multilane highways and interchanges to the reconstruction of arterials and local roads, bridges, small intersection improvements, on- and off-street bicycle facilities, operational analysis, multimodal planning, conceptual design, parking analysis, and safety evaluations. We collaborate across our footprint with numerous other VHB groups on many of our transformative projects.

 Responsibilities

• Preparation of roadway drawings and estimates
• Preparation right-of-way and easement plans
• Assist in development of planning and engineering solutions
• Collaborate with numerous VHB staff to advance projects in a timely manner
• Perform field data collection and other on-site project support activities

Skills and Abilities

• Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills
• Team oriented with strong capability to work independently
• Self-motivated with attention to detail
• A strong work ethic with the desire to learn and achieve
• Knowledge of drawing and mapping tools such as AutoCAD and GIS
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word and Excel) required

Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a degree in engineering or a related field
• Strong interest in transportation
• Ability to work on a computer remotely if necessary
• Ability to travel locally and complete fieldwork if necessary

Our best estimate of the hourly salary range for this position located in Massachusetts is $19 to $30 per hour. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
